Japan Airlines 2.0: Reimagining a National Legacy into a Premium Digital Experience
Japan Airlines (JAL), one of the world’s most prestigious flag carriers, needed a modern mobile application to reflect its dedication to hospitality, efficiency, and innovation. The previous app lacked the elegance and ease that users expect in today’s digital travel landscape. This redesign aimed to blend the timeless Japanese design sensibility with a clean, modern user experience tailored to global travelers. We redesigned the JAL mobile app from the ground up—enhancing usability, improving navigation, and aligning the brand digitally with its world-class in-flight service. THE RESEARCH
To ensure the redesign was both functional and culturally authentic, we conducted extensive research into: User Behavior Patterns: Analyzed how users interact with travel apps, focusing on booking journeys, managing itineraries, and checking in. Competitor Benchmarking: Studied leading airline apps like Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and ANA to identify UX strengths and weaknesses. User Pain Points: Reviewed user feedback from app store reviews and travel forums. Key issues included confusion in booking flows, visual clutter, and difficulty switching languages. Cultural Design Influence: Studied principles of Japanese design—such as simplicity, subtlety, and space—to ensure the visual language resonated with the brand’s heritage. The insights shaped a strategy that prioritized minimalism, speed, and clarity for both local and international flyers.
THE SOLUTION
We created a fresh digital experience aligned with Japan Airlines’ legacy: Minimalist Visual Language: Inspired by Japanese Zen aesthetics—ample white space, soft contrasts, and elegant typography. Streamlined UX Flows: Optimized booking, check-in, and boarding pass retrieval into quick, guided steps. Improved Navigation: Introduced a clear tab-based structure and modular card system for faster access to key features. Cultural Nuance: Integrated soft visual motifs and microinteractions to evoke a sense of calm, trust, and precision. Accessibility & Localization: Designed with WCAG standards and effortless bilingual switching in mind.
